As I watched AJ duck under the yellow crime scene tape and disappear inside the café, a light tap on my shoulder made me jump a foot off the ground. And yelp, too.

I swung around, ready for anything, only to find Maggie laughing at me. “A little jittery, Dani?”

“You surprised me, that’s all.” Of course, I was edgy after the morning I’d had with both Larry and Marcus trying to intimidate me. “I was thinking about something else.”

When Maggie crouched down, Pip ran over for her dose of love, leaping into her arms, and almost knocking her over backwards. It would have served her right for scaring me.

“Hello, Miss Pipsqueak. I’m glad to see you, too,” Maggie cooed while Pip lavished her special brand of doggie kisses on Maggie’s face.

Pip wiggled and yapped her greeting before Luke handed her leash to me.

“Okay.” Maggie stood up and dusted off Pip’s hair from her jeans. “Spill it, Dani,” she said. “What have you got? I know you, and I know you’ve uncovered something.” She looped her arm through mine and steered me away from the café… and AJ.

“What did you discover so far while you’ve been working for Brent and Josie?” I asked, hoping she had something.

“I told them I couldn’t help unless they were totally honest with me.”

“And they confessed to the murder?” I suspected that was wishful thinking but, you never know.

“Not at all, but Brent is in deep swirling water.” She looked around, pulled me close on one side and Luke on the other. “He admitted that he met Wilhelmina at his café last night around nine.”

My hand flew to cover my mouth. “No.” I said in disbelief. This added an important detail to the news from Kyle, that Wilhelmina had business at the café at nine.

“Why did he meet her?” I asked Maggie.

We walked farther away from the café before Maggie continued. “I had to pull it out of Brent, but he told me that he offered Wilhelmina money to stop the protest. He’s scared to death that AJ will find out, accuse him of murder, and throw him in jail.”

“Well, yeah, the cards are certainly stacked against him. And, he wanted Wilhelmina’s slip at the marina.”

“What?” Maggie’s huge eyes popped wide open. “How can they afford a boat? They’re paying me with free soup and sandwiches for the rest of my life. Something isn’t right with this picture.”

“I agree.”

“Don’t you two go jumping to conclusions about Brent and Josie’s money situation,” Luke said, jumping into our conversation with his usual common sense observations. “Maybe there’s a simple explanation. All I know is that they’re both hard workers and speaking as a businessman myself, I suspect the profit margin at Savory Soups & Sandwiches is slim.”

“Good point,” I said. “Josie took the job as dispatcher instead of working full time for Brent. That tells me they needed a regular paycheck instead of relying on the ups and downs of the café.”

Maggie held her hands up in surrender. “Okay. I get your point.
